<< Back

To mark Women in Construction Week, we are proud to spotlight Abigail Beavers, Head of Commercial at AJC Group. Abigail is a key member of our team and has played an instrumental role in delivering affordable housing developments across the region.

Find out more about Abigail’s day-to-day responsibilities, her journey into the construction industry, and her advice for women and girls considering a career in construction.

1. Tell us about your current role and day-to-day at AJC Group.

As Head of Commercial at AJC Group, I oversee the commercial department, ensuring projects are budgeted accurately, tenders are managed effectively, and the right subcontractors are appointed for each scheme. A key part of my role is managing costs throughout a project’s lifecycle. Cost movements are one of the biggest risks for any developer, so our focus is on minimising and mitigating these risks while maintaining quality.

2. What led you to pursue a career in construction?

I actually ‘fell’ into the industry after starting as a receptionist at a local roofing materials supplier. Interacting with subcontractors daily and learning about the materials sparked my interest, and I wanted to deepen my understanding of construction technology—so I undertook an HNC in Quantity Surveying.

3. What do you enjoy most about your career?

The best part of my role, and many others in the industry, is the variety each day brings. One day I’m problem-solving on a quick task, and the next, I’m preparing a budget for a new scheme and reviewing drawings. No two days are the same, which keeps the job exciting.

4. Why should someone consider a career in construction?

There’s something special about physically seeing your work take shape as a building. It’s incredibly rewarding to bring a new subcontractor on board and watch them excel on-site. The diversity of tasks and challenges each week is what makes construction such a dynamic and fulfilling industry to be part of.

5. How can the construction industry attract more female candidates?

The industry needs to showcase the wide range of roles available and what they actually involve day-to-day. Many of my friends and family are surprised when they hear about my role and the variety of jobs within construction. Increasing visibility and education about these opportunities—especially in schools—would help encourage more girls to consider a career in the sector.

6. What advice would you give to someone interested in working in construction?

Be prepared to learn something new every day—no matter what position you’re in. Construction is constantly evolving, so adaptability is key. If you’re open to learning and enjoy problem-solving, it’s an incredibly rewarding industry to be part of.
